Slim hopes for Tunisia
The year 2002 is fast turning into an annus horribilis for Tunisia after it all looked so good at the turn of the year. They had one of the softest groups in the World Cup draw, had scored goals for fun in getting there, and had a African Nations Cup in Mali to help them limber up. Four months later, their respected French coach Henri Michel has resigned, the African Nations Cup campaign was an unmitigated disaster and Tunisia could do with someone, anyone to get a goal for them. In their last match, a 1-0 defeat to fellow World Cup qualifiers Slovenia, Tunisia's awful run in 2002 continued with a 1-0 defeat to Slovenia. The Carthage Eagles hardly had a shot in the game and looked very poor with their tactics mainly revolved around committing niggly fouls in the middle of the pitch. Michel's resignation after his assistant Albert Rust was sacked paved the way for local coaches Amar Souyah and Khemaies Laabidi to take joint control. Ammar Souyeh, Tunisia's joint coach, was realistic in his assessment of how far his team must improve to make an impact this summer. "I'm disappointed with the way the team played in Slovenia," he said. "We made too many technical mistakes, it was quite unlike our players. We started to take control by the end of the game, but that was not enough to equalise. We will have to work hard to prepare ourselves for the World Cup." Their new coaches clearly have much to work on in the six weeks before the World Cup begins.
