Song leads team of distiction

Song has led Cameroon through one of the best periods in their illustrious history

Cameroon's captain Rigobert Song holds the unenviable distinction of being the only player in World Cup history of having been sent off in two successive finals.

"That is something which I am not proud about. I was very young in US '94 and it is certainly something that I do not want to repeat in Japan and South Korea."

Song, who also has the distinction of leading Cameroon to triumph in the Nations Cup in Mali, is full of praise for his side. "We have an excellent team with world-class players. We are going to the World Cup full of confidence and I am hoping that we can do well there."

For Song, success at an international level is something that helps him overcome the disappointment he has experienced at domestic level. After an undistinguished stint for Liverpool, Song moved to West Ham, where he spent most of his time on the bench. This season he has gone on loan to Cologne in the German Bundesliga, where he's had a regular berth in the team.

Cologne have a had a mediocre season and been relegated, but Song has stood head and shoulders above all other players and it seems likely that he will be snapped up by another club at the start of the new season. Champions League and World Club winners, Bayern Munich are one of the clubs that has shown an interest in picking him up for a bargain £3 million.

"I am not spending too much time thinking about all those things. At the moment all I want to do is to finish the season with Cologne and then play in the World Cup with Cameroon. We have set ourselves high goals and I am hoping that we can achieve them."

Playing against many of the players he has played against in the Bundesliga does not phase him. "I know that Germany will not be an easy side to beat, but we have the team to reach the second round and I am hoping that we can go through. In the knock-out stages of the competition, everything is possible!"
