Teak tough Coly never gives up

Teranga tough man

If his performances in the African Cup of Nations are an indication of his potential, Senegalese full-back Ferdinand Coly will be one of the stars of the World Cup.

The 27 year old (10/9/73) is at the peak of his powers. A teak tough defender who is definitely not a man to trifle with, Coly's athleticism really came to the fore this year (2002) in the run to the final of the African Cup of Nations.

In Mali Coly showed he has a license to get forward at every opportunity as one of the most potent attacking weapons in the Senegalese armoury. He also showed a determination as well as a love for the physical battle. No wonder his coach Bruno Metsu rates him so highly.

Metsu says: "He personifies quiet strength. This powerful young man is becoming a big star in Senegal. His fellow countrymen really appreciate his generosity. At right-back he a warrior who never admits defeat and the public love it."

In fact Metsu thinks Coly's powers are indestructible. He sees him as a real rock, his actions, both in the defense and attack, making him indispensible in the rear guard of the lions. Coly is equally at ease in a five men defence as well as a flat back-four and his dreadlocks and distinctive gait have made him a cult hero with the hard core of Senegalese fans.

Coly was raised in France and began his career in the third division with Poitier in 1994 before moving on to Chateaurroux in 1996. In 1999 Lens were persuaded to add him to their Championnat chasing squad.

It was Joel Muller who brought him to Lens. Initially he played in central defence (particularly during the UEFA semi final against Arsenal), but this season he's been in his favourite position at right-back. Lens, unfortunately, just missed out at the death on le championnat.

A good World Cup will help compensate for that. His coach and legions of fans expect no less.
