Quinton's fortune lies elswhere

Quinton Fortune has had precious little to celebrate whist at Old Trafford

It's not a surprise to hear Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune reiterating his desire to move away from Old Trafford in search of first team football.

He's been at the club for three years now since signing from Athletic Madrid in Spain and at nearly 25 is now approaching the best years of his football life.He told African Sport how he felt when he signed for United.

"When I signed for Manchester United I just wanted to sign. I didn't think about how difficult it was going to be and whether I was going to play. I didn't think about anything else.

"It's been very difficult and obviously frustrating. It's a challenge, but there comes a time when you want to play all the time. I'm also not getting any younger and want to get a lot of games under my belt. It's very difficult to get a game every week at United.

This season Fortune has started 11 games with another four sub appearances. He's scored one goal, back in September at Old Trafford against Everton. In his two previous seasons he started 21 games and came off the bench in another eight, scoring a highly respectable seven goals

Fortune went on the transfer list at the start of the season and while his name was linked with a number of clubs, nothing came of the rumours. When we spoke he said that he wasn't quite sure where he was now regarding the transfer list.

He's keen to stress that the only reason he wants to leave United is because of first team football.

"They're a great bunch of lads at United. The local lads like Nicky Butt are great characters, and there are also characters like Dwight Yorke and the captain Roy Keane. Everyone is very nice. I'd love to stay at United for the rest of my career, but I want to play every week and with Ryan Giggs in front of you, when he's on form it is very difficult to get in the team. I've got to play out of my skin every time I get a chance.

The situation at United is also hindering his chances of getting a place in the South African World Cup XI.

"It's very crucial for me to get games with Manchester United otherwise I don't think I will get into the South African team. I don't think I will deserve to be in the team if I don't play enough games for my club. There are other players who play week in and week out for their clubs and the coach should be honest to the players. I f I don't perform I don't deserve to be in the team, its as simple as that.

"Spain, Slovenia and Paraguay will be very difficult. Last time we had France, Denmark and Saudi Arabia. With the experience we have in the team now we stand a good chance of reaching the second round. The Nations Cup helped, although it doesn't help players in terms of being away from their clubs.

What is most important to him right now is his club career.

"I want to play in the Premiership. If I can get a team where I can play week in and week out that would fulfil me. I believe it is the best league in the world and if I play every week then I will definitely improve.

"I'd do anything for the opportunity to do that in Manchester, but if that opportunity arose elsewhere then I'd take it tomorrow because I just want to play football.
