Sammy does it again with new world best

Sammy Kipketer broke his own world record for a 10k road race as he led a Kenyan 1-2-3 sweep in winning the Crescent City Classic on Saturday.

Haile Gebrselassie may soon have to look over his shoulder at this prodigious talent, who will undoubtedly be breathing down his neck in the not to distant future given the way the 20-year-old stole away from some of the great distance runners to destroy the world road record (his own) for 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) by 8 seconds, in a time of 27 minutes, 10 seconds. Kipketer had Tom Nyaniki trailing 34 seconds behind, with Paul Koech third.

"He is a rare talent," Koech said of the 20-year-old winner. "He has showed this ability since he started."
In muggy conditions, Kipketer ran his first mile in 4:16 and his second in 4:15.
Kipketer, who collected $75,000 which included $5,000 for the win, $20,000 Toyota for breaking the world record and $50,000 cash, said "I knew I could do this, I like records."

Lornah Kiplagart, yet another Kenyan of the amazing conveyer belt, was the first woman to finish the race, of which 16,000 competitors entered.
